Don’t Become A Statistic.

67 injuries and 1 death on Block Island mopeds last year alone.

Know the facts.

Mopeds are 156 times more dangerous than cars.

Do you have insurance?

Check to see if it covers you on a moped and covers the cost of emergency air transport.

If you get hurt, there’s no hospital here. Over 40% of injured moped riders must be flown off island.

That will cost you well over $10,000.  And you will have to pay for it yourself if you don’t have sufficient insurance.

Want to rent a bike instead?

Save money, have an awesome time.

Thanks, but I still want to rent a moped.

You’ll need closed-toe shoes and a shirt.

Got ‘em? OK.

If not, sorry, you can’t rent a moped on Block Island.

Ever driven a moped? No?

You’ll need to be trained and pass the test.

Make sure to learn how the brakes and throttle work.

Most serious injuries happen to inexperienced drivers.

Helmets and eye protection are required. At all times.

Yes, you will get helmet hair.  But consider the alternative: A serious head injury or death.

Island-wide speed limit is 25 mph. Seriously.

Violate it and you’ll be fined and could lose your driver’s license.

Dirt roads are off limits.

Mopeds aren’t dirt bikes. They skid in sand and, when they fall, they are heavy.

Block Island’s noise ordinance prohibits excessive horn honking.

Use your horn without good cause and you’ll be fined.

And don’t even think about drinking while driving a moped.

Rhode Island’s tough DUI laws apply to mopeds and are strictly enforced here:

  • Up to 1 year in jail

  • $100 to $500 in fines and penalties

  • License suspension for two to 18 months

Whatever you do, while you’re here…

Please ride safely, share the road, and respect all our walkers, cyclists, and drivers.

So we can all safely enjoy our beautiful island.
